The island, belonging to Venezuela, is an island with big contrasts. Beautiful beaches, big mountains, modern shopping-malls, hotels and casinos but also ancient and colonial architecture, modern shopping avenues with exclusive stores but also poor and abandoned areas in the suburbs.

Margarita Island has it all. From Margarita Island it is easy to explore the rest of Venezuela. Tropical rainforest, the highest waterfall of the world, enormous rivers, bounty islands, rocky mountains and huge savannas with a big variety of flora and fauna, you will have it all close. The perfect (holiday) destination for everyone who loves the sun and the beach but also perfect for the people who love the beauty of nature.
The island is divided in two parts. The smallest part, Macanao, is plain without a lot of population and a natural park. The most important part of the island is on the other side, that is twice as big and that has a great variety of landscaping. In the middle of this part in between of the mountains there you have the capital and cultural centre of the island, Asunción. You can still see the walls of defence from a long time ago and the castle of Santa Rosa that still has his historic spirit. Porlamar on the south part is a lot bigger and so called the metropolis and business centre of the island, plenty of shops, casinos, nightlife, and a market and in the downtown centre Plaza Bolivar, a very nice shopping boulevard.
Close to this city are many hotels , some with private beaches.  Also close to here you can find the airport. Pampatar, 10 kilometres northeast, was in the past an old harbour. El Agua beach is the most important beach in the north part. Further on you have in the North West part the town of Juangriego, where hey have the famous fort with a precious view on the bay. The beach of Playa el Agua is the most famous beach with almost 3 kilometres of length, high rising palms and the sea with nice waves. On the beach you will find plenty of restaurants and hotels. Other nice beaches are Playa La Galera and Playa Caribe noorden zijn ook Playa La Galera en Playa Caribe. For sightseeing you can go to the old town of La Asunción with the national parks Cerro el Copey with the highest mountain of the island and La Restinga with the rare red mangrove trees and the green/yellow parrots. Also interesting is the other part of the island, Macanao. Although very dry and dusty, this part is interesting because it looks like the Wild West with the big amount of cactuses and the small fishers villages.
